The Tasmanian Bar is an independent referral bar. It is a constituent member of the Australian Bar Association formally admitted as a constituent member of that body on 18 August 1996.

The Tasmanian Bar is an association of independent barristers based in Tasmania providing legal representation and assistance to the community.

Each member of the Bar has elected under the Legal Profession Act 1993 to practice exclusively as a barrister.

The Tasmanian Independent Bar is incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 as the Tasmanian Independent Bar Inc. and is recognised by the Tasmanian Government as a professional association.
